I usually don’t laude over AI but Claude 3.7 Sonnet does raise the bar in assisting with code chores, as long as you proofread it afterwards. Pi news, of course and projects galore. Resources for Learning Embedded Systems

When getting started working with embedded systems, there is a lack of information available to beginners. Embedded Artistry has gathered useful reference materials to get you started with programming and embedded systems development - Embedded Artistry.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is out and shows strong improvements in coding and front-end web development. Along with the model, Anthropic also introduced a command line tool for agentic coding, Claude Code. Claude Code is available as a limited research preview, and enables developers to delegate substantial engineering tasks to Claude directly from their terminal - Anthropic.
Examples:
- A Reddit post detailing how someone took a 27-year-old visual basic EXE file, fed it to Claude 3.7, and watched as it reverse-engineered the program and rewrote it in Python.
- Adafruit posts “We’re vibin’ with Claude 3.7 and writing uBlox drivers”, implementing a complex protocol driver using Claude 3.7.
The MagPi is now the Raspberry Pi Official Magazine

The MagPi magazine, including HackSpace, has been reborn as the Raspberry Pi Official Magazine. They have a special offer currently, get three issues for ten UK Pounds. Issue 150 is now out - Raspberry Pi News. Via X.

You Should Build a Robot

Thinking about building a robot? You should! But don’t know where to start? In a PyCascades talk, Sage Elliot breaks down the barriers in building your own robotic project using MicroPython and microprocessors. You’ll learn what a robot is, why building one is fun (maybe even useful), and how to get started with the essential components. Raspberry Pi sold first product on 29 February, 2012. On their 13th birthday (or as close as we can get when it isn’t a leap year), and their first as a publicly listed company, they’ve been awarded new company of the year in the PLC Awards 2024 - X.

I’m making good progress on updating the NINA-FW firmware to use a recent version of ESP-IDF. NINA-FW used on the AirLift ESP32 co-processors. NINA-FW used to have its own modified copies of several Arduino libraries, but I am making it use the updated, standard versions found in the arduino-esp32 Board Support Package for Arduino IDE.

This week I published the initial version of the new display emoji text library, and made some improvements to it like allowing the text color to be set, and allowing the text to be updated. I’ve been working on a compass project guide for the 240x240 round displays recently added to the store, the guide went live today. I wrote code for a flight radar for the same display, I’ll make it into a guide, but there are a few other things to work on before coming back to it. I’ve also started tinkering in the core to add inverted color functionality for TileGrid, while looking into this I figured out a one-liner statement that can be used to set the colors of the default display for the CircuitPython terminal.

I’ve still been spending a lot of time working in Arduino, but I did a few Python items.
First, I worked with Scott and Thach on problems with Pico PIO USB on the Fruit Jam. My particular interest was chasing bugs that affected the RP2350 when it was overclocked. This could affect CircuitPython usage, but was most relevant in Arduino, where the DVI HSTX library always sets an overclock to 264MHz.
Second, I wrote a new example for piomatter
on the Raspberry Ppi 5. This example uses a library called pyvirtualdisplay
to run an X11 program in a virtual framebuffer and display the result on an LED panel. Tim will be documenting this in a new page in the guide for this library.

This week I’ve been deep in the USB weeds. The simplest bug I found was that I wasn’t enabling power to the USB ports. 🤦 I also found a few cases where PIO USB isn’t receiving correctly and the error recovery isn’t quite good enough. I’m going to continue testing with a myriad of USB devices.

This week I’ve been working on a bigger than normal project- a terminal from the TV show Severance. A few of these projects have been popping up and I’m excited to share my version. I think Severance terminals might be the new Pip Boy. My version is written in Python with Blinka and runs on a Raspberry Pi 5. For the case, I imaged a portable version of the terminal that can also act as a fun Raspberry Pi case with the new touch screen display. The software is a fully playable version of the Macrodata Refinement program with a trackball mouse. I hope to wrap up the guide by next week.

Embedded World 2025 will be held March 11 to 13, 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany. Raspberry Pi will be there - Embedded World.

The Hackaday Europe hardware conference returns on Saturday, March 15th in Berlin, Germany. Plus extra festivities on the 14th and 16th - EventBright.

The next MicroPython Meetup in Melbourne will be on March 26th – Meetup. You can see recordings of previous meetings on YouTube.

City of STEM and Maker Faire Los Angeles, California is being held April 12, 2025 - MakerFaire.

The community is coming back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for PyCon US 2025 May 14 - May 22, 2025 - us.pycon.org.

KiCad conferences (KiCon) to be held this year include 28 - 30 May 2025 in San Diego, California, 19 - 20 Sept 2024 in Bochum, Germany, and to be determined in Asia - KiCad.
